Every time I go down the stairs to get the mail, go for a walk, return home, or just throw some bottles in the recycling bin, I am still amazed at these very old garage doors that have been now altered permanently. Wanted to do something with them for many years, perhaps a mural with big trees like in my backyard, something like that, organic…

So when history asks us to recognize its organic ever-changing or repeating ways, its stasis, evolution or revolution, we must show up with appropriate responses, however unimagined they might have been before. Collectively and individually. And it is not always our choice. We must pay attention, listen, receive and obey the demands of the changing times. As humanity we are in such an acute phase on all levels.

What is your response to the demands of our times?

  1. When I first saw the mural on your garage doors, I was struck by the directness and vividness. It was jarring, provocative-I thought what is something like this doing in such a well kept and refined neighborhood but then as I looked at it more closely, at the names-the honoring and valuing of the killed people, African Americans, I was moved. As I reflect on it even more, its beauty and significance has grown. Being white and comfortable, it is relatively easy to not see or at the least not allow to intrude the violence and racism African Americans live with daily. To be reminded of it so starkly and tenderly in the midst of our lives is a brave and necessary act for our souls. Thank you.
