 Nothing will be the same in our future from here on.

For a while now, we have been globally in the middle of rapid acceleration on many levels. We humans though don’t easily comprehend the power of “exponential.” Like the worldwide spread of Corona virus, or the massive firestorms that we are experiencing here in California in recent years, or the flash floods – “exponential” is a law of nature. This phenomenon operates also within us humans. Body and mind might be erupting seemingly out of the blue in sudden disease or violent behavior, leaving behind suffering and tragedies in a flash. Always though something has been growing unnoticed, has been festering in the dark, has been spreading invisibly, and then suddenly it is exploding, sweeping, destroying, and shocking us with its force.

This also happens in constructive ways, like in the learning process and the miracles of the healing process. Sometimes I am practicing a subtle movement over and over again for quite a while, and it does not yet feel right, till it suddenly falls into place, the energy moves. Wonder. Or I keep repeating a section of cello music, and it just does not sound fluid, till a few days later it flows suddenly. Delight. Or editing on a film for weeks, juggling the pieces, and suddenly voilà – the envisioned form and meaning manifest out of the blue. Gratitude. Or a sprained ankle just seems to not be healing, till suddenly it is reliable again. Relief. All along “it” has been gestating and growing in the dark. Then it bursts to the surface, and the heart opens with surprise. Grace. Awe.

This is teaching us commitment, dedication, imagination, vision, patience, listening, and humility.

yeah,thank you for sharing... let it be your mantra as you are exploring your retirement. I am such a fan of learning and the wonder of it, since i am a child. For me so much to learn every day, from the garden, the plants, even my nemesis the squirrels :) and from my cello teacher and practicing, memorizing, from my students and teaching, and my own practices of T'ai Chi, Kum Nye, making medicines, writing. Now not being over worked and pressured – i ever more delight in the mystery and the revelations that come as gifts along the way. Dedication and devotion most important. Getting old as being rich :) magic....

  Immigration On Friday morning of September 20, I am spending a couple of hours for my naturalization interview in the federal building  on 630 Sansome Street in San Francisco  that houses the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Then later at 1 pm, in the oath ceremony, I am reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. Standing, holding up my right hand like everyone else, repeating the words after our master of ceremonies, I am engulfed in a chorus of immigrants’ voices from all over the world. Out of maybe 80, only two are Caucasian. The man leading us through the 20 minutes ceremony, is most likely a judge, but without his robe. He is an elegant, kind, and personable elder.   Last Dance with Uncle Oak This time, to honor the loss of another member of my ancient live oaks, I want to climb into the tree. Like I used to do 32 years ago, move, touch, feel – suspended in the air, resting on bark, sensations to be remembered. Perhaps documenting it? I ask around last minute, and find a good match in photographer  Rebecca Weinstein  to take stills of my last dance with old Uncle Oak. Once my naked feet touch the rough bark, a dynamic joy starts spreading through my body and limbs. The surprising urge to elongate myself within the safety of his sturdy arms. Next morning in a different light, I dress for another chance of closeness, envisioning my smallness to be captured. The freedom to grow into a tree, become tree , get an oak’s view, blend well, and disappear eventually.
